Chaos, darkness, and fate coalesce around the union of St. Augustine, Florida’s Delta Haints and Austin’s Ghost Wolves for their new split single, “Cars Hiss By My Window” and “Fast (2300 AD),” on Lunch Records. The former is a haunted take on Jim Morrison and the Doors’ poetic ode to ennui and danger, from the classic 1971 L.A. Woman. The latter is a howling paean to noise and uncertainty. Delta Haints’ sonic framework is classic blues, pulled in unpredictable but sonorous fresh directions. The Ghost Wolves pursue a raucous take on the style, culled from punk rock, transgressive sonics, and horror films. The release’s highly collectible jacket art is drawn by The Ghost Wolves singer and guitarist Carley Wolf, and the red vinyl single is manufactured by Third Man Pressing in Detroit.

The double-release was instigated by Kurt St. Thomas, the cigar box guitarist and conceptualist behind Delta Haints, a multi-racial group of varied ages and diverse musical backgrounds strongly bound by the sound and spirit of deep blues. “Cars Hiss By My Window” is the follow-up to Delta Haints’ debut single, “Ashes of My Mojo,” also on Lunch Records.

“I stole my half-brother’s copy of L.A. Woman on vinyl when I was 9 years old, and I still have it,” explains St. Thomas. “The album was one of my earliest introductions to the blues. As much as I loved ‘Riders on the Storm,’ it was ‘Cars Hiss By My Window,’ ‘Crawling King Snake,’ and ‘Hyacinth House’ that really grabbed me. I had no idea who Jim Morrison was, or that he was dead. I was also perplexed by the lyric ‘a cold girl’ll kill you.’ Years later I found myself spinning it on my college radio station.”

Searching for a cover for the debut album Delta Haints are currently recording for release in late 2021, “Cars Hiss By My Window” was a natural. In keeping with the band’s mission to connect the blues’ deep roots to the present, St. Thomas set out to “shake up the I-IV-V structure without eliminating the I-IV-V structure.” The result is a loping, hypnotic slow-burn groove built on guitars, keyboards, and the unleashed performances of saxist Dana Colley, from the legendary band Morphine, and Haints vocalist M.J. Baker. Colley walks a high-wire between old-school honking and free-jazz, while Baker aims her dynamic gospel-fired voice for the heavens. The Legendary Rich Gilbert also lends guitar, while Paul Buckley drums, Spencer Albee plays keys, and Lu Rubino, who also produced and engineered at his Fish Tank Recording studio in St. Augustine, plays bass. “I had initially planned on another song from the album to come out for Record Store Day, but I love this so much I had to drop it now.”

St. Thomas also chose The Ghost Wolves, the duo of Carley Wolf and drummer Jonny Wolf, to share the release. “I love their sound,” he says. “It’s so raw and punk rock and futuristic at the same time.” In their 10 years together, Ghost Wolves have played more than 1,000 shows in 30 countries and recorded two albums and a string of singles.

“We recorded ‘Fast (2300 AD)’ on our own Tascam 388 portastudio during the summer of 2020,” says Jonny Wolf. “It’s kind of a true-crime inspired story, and it really shows where the band is at right now.” The Ghost Wolves are currently at work on their third album.
