In 1995, Christian McNeill was the lead singer/guitarist for Schtum, released a CD for Sony’s Work Records, landed a top 20 Modern Rock Hit in 1995 and criss-crossed continents playing festivals and touring Europe and the US.

Schtum disbanded, and McNeill left Northern Ireland for Boston with a slew of new songs and newfound energy for making music. He recruited fellow Derry bassist Jeremy Dryden to join him and everything became complete when the two met Pennsylvanian drummer phenom Jeff Berlin and Hybrasil was born.

Named after an Irish folklore, Hybrasil, released their debut CD Friendly Destroyer on the now defunct BAM Records in 1998. Produced by Steve Fisk (Screaming Trees/ Soul Coughing), Friendly Destroyer landed the band on CMJ’s college charts and on much coveted opening slots for such bands as Morphine, The Violent Femmes and THE THE.

The Morphine connection grew stronger as Hybrasil started an extended family that joined the band live and on records that includes saxophonist Dana Colley (Morphine), guitarist Duke Levine (Mary Chapin Carpenter), mandolin player Jimmy Ryan (Catie Curtis), and trumpeter Tom Halter (Either/Orchestra).

In 1999, upon the sudden death of Mark Sandman, McNeill was recruited to be the lead singer of the posthumous Morphine project, Orchestra Morphine. The Orchestra Morphine tour put McNeill in front of crowds in European and US cities he last visited with Schtum.

After months of sold-out residencies in the sweaty clubs of Boston, the band hit the studio again in late 1999; the result is The Kicker. Ten bold songs produced and recorded again with Fisk in Seattle and in Boston with producer/engineer Matthew Ellard. The Kicker was released on March 12th on Lunch Records (Wicked Distribution)
